Selivia stared at her betrothed, utterly at a loss for words. She couldn’t believe he was actually standing before her, with the rain in his hair and a look of concern on his face. He was as handsome as she remembered, but he looked older, too, more self-assured.
“We should get somewhere less exposed,” Latch said. “Are you well enough to walk?”
“Oh, yes.” Selivia stopped gaping and hurried to join Latch in the mouth of the cave. She tried to smooth down her hair, which was dripping and tangled and probably looked worse than when she’d spent all day on dragonsback. Despite how many times she had imagined their reunion, she didn’t know how to greet him. Should they hug? Kiss?
She settled for a nervous smile. “I’m here!”
“So you are.” Latch studied her closely. His manner was reserved, tense. “Your hands are bleeding.”
“It’s just a few scrapes.” Selivia wiped them on her damp trousers.
“We’ll get you some bandages down in the camp.” Latch took out a Vertigonian Everlight and turned toward the back of the cave. The light glanced off polished stone and discarded tools before illuminating the entrance to a tunnel. “Stay close to me.”
Selivia had no intention of doing otherwise. She felt wrung out after her terrifying flight up the mountainside. This was the same Latch she’d exchanged letters with for years. She was safe with him even though she felt as if she were meeting a stranger.
“How did you get here?” Latch asked as he led the way into the tunnel, which sloped downward into darkness.
“Prince Chadrech was kind enough to deliver me.”
Once she started talking, the story came out in a garbled rush. She told of her arrival in Sharoth, her efforts to determine his whereabouts, the voyage on the Silverliner, and Fenn’s disappearance. She was nervous, and she couldn’t tell how Latch felt about her arrival. The darkness made it impossible to discern his reactions.
“Then I almost got struck by lightning!” she said when she got to her escape from Chadrech’s soldiers. “And that’s not even the strangest thing I’ve seen in the last hour.”
“I’m so sorry about that,” Latch said. “It’s hard to control.”
“What is?”
“The Lightning. I was aiming for the building.”
Selivia stopped short. “You did that?”
“I was trying to distract them so you could escape, and I’m out of Watermight.” Latch turned to face her, holding up the Everlight between them. “The Lightning is the new magical substance I told you about.”
“You didn’t tell me about a new substance.” To Selivia’s dismay, her voice cracked. “I had to hear that from Chadrech.”
Latch’s forehead wrinkled. “But didn’t you get my letters?”
“I know you’ve been studying ancient Wielders, but your last letter was two months ago.” Tears sprang up in Selivia’s eyes, despite her best efforts to hold them back. “You could have warned me what I was getting myself into.”
Latch blinked. “Two months? Sel, I write every week.”
“What?” Selivia wondered if her hearing was still messed up from the lightning strike. “The last I heard
